The Most Ambitious Effort Using the Power of Coffee and People to Restore Forests On Our Planet
Watch the Call-to-Action video featuring Dr. Jane Goodall, PhD, DBE, Founder – Jane Goodall Institute & UN Messenger of Peace
Her revolutionary discovery linking primates with the use of tools changed scientific thinking, and she has witnessed first-hand how people can use coffee as a tool to restore forests and protect life. Let’s prove her right … once again.

How Does IT Work?
We Use a Radically Restorative Coffee Supply Chain
With Integrity that Challenges and Incorporates the Best of Practices
Innovative Growing
We grow two things, Coffee & Forests, using Integrated Open Canopy™ (IOC).
IOC™ is an ecologically sound coffee-growing technique that ensures increased yields and transforms half of private small-holder coffee farms into restored natural forests.
IOC™ was developed by the Mesoamerican Development Institute (MDI) in collaboration with coffee producers.
This innovative system focuses on restoring and conserving forest habitat on coffee farms, and includes incentives for organic production, composting, clean & efficient wet processing, and reduces the heavy use of fertilizers and agro-chemicals in coffee production to restore depleted soils.
Growers receive the majority of the carbon credit payment for restoring forest habitat on their farms.
Innovative Processing
We utilize proven, patented Cafe Solar® technologies powered by renewable energy.
Patented coffee processing 'dryers' are powered by hybrid solar energy and biofuels.
Solar-thermal, biofuels, and photovoltaic = 100% renewable!
Eliminates the use of firewood and fossil fuels in the process (a fact largely unknown by consumers).
Developed over 30 years by the Mesoamerican Development Institute (MDI), these renewable energy dryers are scalable to coffee-growing regions.
Innovative Trade
A coffee & carbon E-trading platform with the highest integrity CO2e Offsets/Credits.
Transparency provides confidence to the quality, efficiency, and value of goods.
This supply chain is co-developed by Merchants of Green Coffee with its decades worth of industry experience with specific focus on the coffee market.
It is the only net zero coffee supply chain that includes the measurement, accounting, and trading of Scope 3 emissions.
Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions categorize the types of carbon emissions a company creates in its operations and supply chain.
Scope 1 (direct) and Scope 2 (indirect) are relatively easy for companies to measure, reduce and offset. Scope 3 includes the beginning of the supply chain (includes the extraction of raw materials and energy use in the origin country of a product).
Our platform is the E-Trading solution to reduce coffee's footprint to net zero ... and it's a big deal.
Coffee
— The Economic Solution —
In its relatively short history (less than 500 years), coffee made its way into the hands of billions. Natural to Ethiopia, this fruit-seed-bean is now found in nearly every home and on every street corner of the globe.
Today, we are at a coffee-climate crossroads. Coffee can be an awakening force of good!
Forests
— The Environmental Solution —
The global expansion of coffee cultivation is a primary driver of deforestation and replaces remaining tropical forests. Commercial coffee production requires more and more land for constantly increasing production at the lowest price and climate change is making things worse.
Forests add value to the supply chain. It’s time to account for them.
People
— The Social Solution —
More than half of the world’s 25 million coffee farmers are living in a cycle of poverty causing a lack of stable healthcare and education, and often leading to emigration. Moreover, for every 1lb of of coffee produced more than 100 pounds of CO2e emissions are released.
People are responsible for changing coffee’s impact. This is the wake up call to act!

We Are Forest Restorers with Solutions
Addressing Climate Change & Biodiversity Loss
Our developers, farmers, agronomists, engineers, and scientists have collaborated on finding solutions to restore forests since 1996. We’ve always recognized that forests are the lungs of the earth and have been pioneering a natural solution to carbon sequestration while protecting parks, biodiversity, soil, and watersheds to address climate change. Most importantly, our forest solution is available today!
“Forest Plus Carbon” Advantage
We’re cultivating a new (eco)system for regenerative agro-forestry, one that nurtures new forests, sequesters carbon, and generates value-added carbon credits that encourages behavioural change and practices at the farm-level. Realizing our triple bottom line framework, this benefits the environment and provides additional income to those involved in coffee cultivation and the surrounding regions. Carbon sequestration has been a part of this program since 1996, and key measurements and data have been ongoing since the beginning of its development.
We Partner with Farmers in Forest Restoration
Farmers are Co-Developers and Partners
Without farmers, we have no coffee. With allied farmers, we grow a stabilized supply of coffee that restores forests. Through our model, coffee is the crop that can help stop the cycle of poverty that is commonly caused by the exploitative extraction of resources.
Our farmer partners receive increased prices for their coffee and a new revenue stream through carbon credit production. We stand firm on building long-term equitable relationships with farmers and communities and create a model of economic opportunity that benefits everyone.
Reforestation and Protection is All About Collaboration
Nothing good gets done without collaboration. A global solution to coffee’s impact requires the whole supply chain and its people (i.e. growers, processors, traders, exporters, shippers, importers, roasters, sellers and makers). It also needs partners in reforestation (i.e. farmers, private land owners, communities, NGOs, and eco-social companies).
We have decades worth of relationship-building and collaboration with stakeholders and are actively expanding our network.
