How Does IT Work?

We Use a Radically Restorative Coffee Supply Chain

With Integrity that Challenges and Incorporates the Best of Practices

Innovative Growing

We grow two things, Coffee & Forests, using Integrated Open Canopy™ (IOC).

IOC™ is an ecologically sound coffee-growing technique that ensures increased yields and transforms half of private small-holder coffee farms into restored natural forests.

IOC™ was developed by the Mesoamerican Development Institute (MDI) in collaboration with coffee producers.

This innovative system focuses on restoring and conserving forest habitat on coffee farms, and includes incentives for organic production, composting, clean & efficient wet processing, and reduces the heavy use of fertilizers and agro-chemicals in coffee production to restore depleted soils.

Growers receive the majority of the carbon credit payment for restoring forest habitat on their farms.

Innovative Processing

We utilize proven, patented Cafe Solar® technologies powered by renewable energy.

Patented coffee processing 'dryers' are powered by hybrid solar energy and biofuels.

Solar-thermal, biofuels, and photovoltaic = 100% renewable!

Eliminates the use of firewood and fossil fuels in the process (a fact largely unknown by consumers).

Developed over 30 years by the Mesoamerican Development Institute (MDI), these renewable energy dryers are scalable to coffee-growing regions.

Innovative Trade

A coffee & carbon E-trading platform with the highest integrity CO2e Offsets/Credits.

Transparency provides confidence to the quality, efficiency, and value of goods.

This supply chain is co-developed by Merchants of Green Coffee with its decades worth of industry experience with specific focus on the coffee market.

It is the only net zero coffee supply chain that includes the measurement, accounting, and trading of Scope 3 emissions.

Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions categorize the types of carbon emissions a company creates in its operations and supply chain.

Scope 1 (direct) and Scope 2 (indirect) are relatively easy for companies to measure, reduce and offset. Scope 3 includes the beginning of the supply chain (includes the extraction of raw materials and energy use in the origin country of a product).

Our platform is the E-Trading solution to reduce coffee's footprint to net zero ... and it's a big deal.

Triple Bottom Line Accountability

More than half of the world’s 25 million coffee farmers are living in a cycle of poverty causing a lack of stable healthcare and education, and often leading to emigration. Moreover, for every 1lb of of coffee produced more than 100 pounds of CO2e emissions are released.

People are responsible for changing coffee’s impact. This is the wake up call to act!

We Are Forest Restorers with Solutions

Addressing Climate Change & Biodiversity Loss

Our developers, farmers, agronomists, engineers, and scientists have collaborated on finding solutions to restore forests since 1996. We’ve always recognized that forests are the lungs of the earth and have been pioneering a natural solution to carbon sequestration while protecting parks, biodiversity, soil, and watersheds to address climate change. Most importantly, our forest solution is available today!

“Forest Plus Carbon” Advantage

We’re cultivating a new (eco)system for regenerative agro-forestry, one that nurtures new forests, sequesters carbon, and generates value-added carbon credits that encourages behavioural change and practices at the farm-level. Realizing our triple bottom line framework, this benefits the environment and provides additional income to those involved in coffee cultivation and the surrounding regions. Carbon sequestration has been a part of this program since 1996, and key measurements and data have been ongoing since the beginning of its development.

We Partner with Farmers in Forest Restoration

Farmers are Co-Developers and Partners

Without farmers, we have no coffee. With allied farmers, we grow a stabilized supply of coffee that restores forests. Through our model, coffee is the crop that can help stop the cycle of poverty that is commonly caused by the exploitative extraction of resources.

Our farmer partners receive increased prices for their coffee and a new revenue stream through carbon credit production. We stand firm on building long-term equitable relationships with farmers and communities and create a model of economic opportunity that benefits everyone.

Reforestation and Protection is All About Collaboration

Nothing good gets done without collaboration. A global solution to coffee’s impact requires the whole supply chain and its people (i.e. growers, processors, traders, exporters, shippers, importers, roasters, sellers and makers). It also needs partners in reforestation (i.e. farmers, private land owners, communities, NGOs, and eco-social companies).

We have decades worth of relationship-building and collaboration with stakeholders and are actively expanding our network.

Be Part of the Solution

Integrated Open Canopy™ (IOC) - Coffee Production & Processing with Renewable Energy

Integrated Open Canopy™ (IOC) coffee farming (in Spanish, “Dosel Abierto Integrado (DAI)”) is a system of forest-restoring coffee agriculture that directly contributes to the protection and/or restoration of forest habitat, is dependent on the coffee being processed in a carbon-neutral facility, and is a part of the Yoro Biological Corridor initiative.

IOC™ coffee farms are proven to support the highest biodiversity.

IOC™ coffee farms are based on the concept of land-sparing agriculture, requiring an equal farm-to-forest ratio. This means that at least 50 percent of a farmer’s land consists of coffee farm, with the other half consisting of conserved and/or restored forest habitat.

Cafe Solar® is the first restorative coffee supply, developed to provide solutions to address coffee’s primary negative impacts on nature and people.

It addresses: Destruction of watersheds & forest habitat, loss of biodiversity, soil degradation, unemployment, low & unstable farmer incomes

How the Cafe Solar® model accomplishes its goals:

  • Eliminates the deforestation due to conventional coffee production and coffee processing.
  • Restores and protect watersheds and soils.
  • Supports the highest biodiversity.
  • Creates forest connectivity between threatened national parks.
  • Clean coffee wet mills that include the collection of coffee pulp to be composted into organic fertilizer.
  • Uses hybrid solar/biomass-powered coffee processing that replaces conventional wood-burning processing.
  • Provides new & improved sources of income for farmers.
  • Provides employment opportunities for local youth in mapping & monitoring farms and use of renewable energy technologies.
  • Encourages female ownership and participation in management positions as women are often the key drivers in measuring and addressing the social and environmental issues.
  • Creates scalability that can be replicated in other coffee-growing regions.

Worldwide, voluntary carbon offsets/credits have become a $2 billion annual industry. This is expected to grow to $10 billion in the coming years.

The production of credits and the reduction of CO2e emissions offers the global business community and consumers a way to track and account for their footprint of products and services. These are important details of any supply chain and are the most effective way to find agreement and provide a path to address what was a 1.5 degrees Celsius rise in global atmospheric temperature. The current trajectory has global temperatures on a path that will exceed 1.7 degrees Celsius by 2025. Verification and trust in the Voluntary Carbon Markets is key to making them work. Many of these 'schemes' have not proven themselves to be effective.

Cafe Solar® carbon credits (generated with IOC™ growing and combined with Cafe Solar® renewable energy coffee processing) are of the highest quality with proven integrity, transparency, and local verification.

The existing market has failed to recognize that expanding coffee production is the principal driver of forest loss in the headwaters—high elevation forest where coffee is grown. This forest removal contributes to climate change, loss of biodiversity, and degrades watersheds vital for coffee producing communities and cities, towns, and municipalities, downstream.

Unlike other carbon credit schemes, our goal regarding monitoring and validation is to create the local capacity to achieve local accredited independent validation, as it does not yet exist in Central America.

It is currently not possible for a website to deliver coffee to a global audience. Supply logistics are a complex web of relationships.

For the love of coffee…..the global coffee solutions deals with this issues in a delicious way. It order to provide the solution…..consumers do not need to immediate change their source for coffee. What is required is to account for it.

No coffee today can be considered to be sustainable without accounting for its footprint - current and historical. Many coffee companies make sustainability and net zero claims that cannot be validated by consumers. These Scope 3 measurements determines the future of what is in our coffee cups.

The global coffee solution is about transitioning small private land farms to IOC production. This is a half farm half forest model.

That being said there are things you can do to get Cafe Solar.

1) Place an advanced order to show support.

2) Buy Cafe Solar Carbon Credits & Support your current local/regional coffee roaster.

375,000 lbs of coffee will be available from the 2024/2025 harvest. With advanced Cafe Solar Coffee orders and the purchase of Cafe Solar Carbon Credits...more farms will transition to IOC production,  more Cafe Solar Factories will be built and more restorative coffee becomes available globally. This is the Global Coffee Solution.

On this April 22nd, 2024 Earth Day, and in my 90th birthday year, I, Jane Goodall, am joining a group of visionaries to announce a collaborative effort that will hopefully, when finalized, be a part of my legacy.  We will use coffee – that drink that so many of us love – to restore forests and biodiversity. I have seen first hand that this is possible.

I am joining forces with Global Coffee Solution to help make our world a better place for all life. This coffee solution involves measuring and counting the carbon stored in trees and soil and it can help address three global crises: biodiversity loss, climate change, environmental equity. In addition it will add to my legacy foundation and continued funding for Roots & Shoots.

Grow trees, reduce our footprint, value trees, drink coffee, grow more trees, and generate measured, verified carbon offsets … Good Carbon Offsets.

10% for the Forests … Forever.
